Nye County law enforcement are displaying their respective support for a fallen Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer.
Sheriff Sharon Wehrly issued a decree this week for all Nye County deputies to shroud their badges with black bands in honor of fallen LVMPD Officer Charleston Hartfield, as well as the numerous other victims who lost their lives during the attack at the Route 91 Harvest Festival concert in Las Vegas on Sunday, Oct. 1.
“Please join us in remembering their lives and reflecting on the many sacrifices made,” stated a sheriff’s office Facebook post. “Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, we stand with you in this time of grief and pain. Las Vegas, Nevada, we are with you.”
Hartfield was a 34-year-old military veteran, who was known affectionately as “ChuckyHart.”
He also coached youth football.
The Metropolitan Police Department released the following statement Monday:
“The incident on the Las Vegas Strip has devastated families and friends of victims in this terrible attack. The LVMPD is no different, and our Metro family mourns the loss of an officer and we have employees whose family members have suffered significant injury. Those families are asking for privacy during this tough time as they process and move forward through this event. They are respectfully asking for the media to let them grieve in privacy and not to contact them.”
Several individuals on Monday afternoon came together outside Hartfield’s home in Henderson in a show of support for Hartfield’s family.
Upward of 100 people, including children and coaches from the football program and their families, gathered around midfield at a Las Vegas park on Monday evening, some were holding lighted candles, while others wore the blue-and-white colors of Hartfield’s team, the Cowboys.
Another off-duty officer, whose name has not been confirmed, was shot in the neck and shoulder. He was listed in serious condition late Monday afternoon.
Locally, a 6 p.m. candlelight vigil is planned at the Pahrump Nugget on Saturday for all of the victims who were killed and wounded during the mass shooting.
