NyE Communities Coalition has found its Career Connections has unused funds and is offering to partially or fully pay for short-term vocational training to those that qualify.
As an employee wanting to further or make a career move, or someone seeking employment, NyECC’s One Stop Director Tim Wigchers said, “This might be the opportunity of a lifetime.”
NyECC has been awarded a grant for the vocational training program and the funds must either be used or returned to the grant funder, the U.S. Department of Labor. Wigchers said, “We’d rather use it for the good of the community than give it back.”
He added, “This resource is very under-utilized.” Unfortunately, none of the training classes are beng offered here. The system has its own providers either online or in Las Vegas. He said there are literally hundreds of classes available but because of the time constraints on this particular grant, any class of interest must be completed by June 30.
He said the same grant application for 2014-15 is pending and getting another opportunity for training is not “guaranteed.”
All of the paperwork and qualification requirements must also be met on a very truncated timeline. Wigchers said, “There are no income restrictions. This is open to literally everyone.” He advised moving quickly to get the registration started.
Someone interested in training must attend at least one of three workshops before they can even meet with a case manager to explore the options. It is a Career Connections requirement.
“We’re looking for people who are committed to making use of these training classes. We find people are more successful when they make their own choices and not when we make it for them.”
Workshops are scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesdays for resume writing and how to dress for success; 9 a.m., Thursdays is the NyECC Career Connections Orientation.
This Friday, May 9, the workshop will begin at 1 p.m. for job readiness with mock interviews. Normally, the Friday starting time is 9 a.m.
To enroll in the program, you must be eligible to work in the U.S. and have documentation to prove it. If you are male and born after Jan. 1, 1960, you must demonstrate registration with Selective Service. Wigchers said, “There is a quick internet check for this.”

This is a sample of trainings that might qualify:
Basic computer programming; general office clerk; HVAC (several specialties); medical terminology; Microsoft Excel intermediate and advanced; Microsoft Word intermediate and advanced; QuickBooks; receptionist and truck driver “CDL.”
Wigchers said the truck driver CDL class graduates have “almost 100 percent job placement.”

Wigchers said there is a Workforce Connections Eligible Training provider list. “This and all of our adult and youth workforce programs are funded through Workforce Connections.”

Wigchers said another important event is set for 9 a.m. to noon, Friday, May 9th in a Career and Veteran Services Fair, in the NyECC Activities Center across from the Nye County School District office.
