Pahrump area couple opens retail store with Southwestern-style goods, original artwork

A local couple has teamed up to start selling Southwestern-style clothing, jewelry, rugs and other products, along with original artwork on the north end of town.

Mike and Jessica Wakefield, of Pahrump, opened a small shop in May with Southwestern-style products. The store sits in front of their residence at 1731 N. Murphy St., on the corner of Murphy and Utah streets, just east of W. Mesquite Avenue.

The business also carries original paintings, designed and created by co-owner Jessica Wakefield.

Things have only been underway for about five months, but it’s been a positive process so far.

“It’s a slow process, but things are starting to pick up,” said Mike Wakefield, who spent three decades in the corrections industry and is now retired.

Mike said he came to Pahrump about four years ago from Arizona. Since that time, his interest has grown in opening a shop of this type.

“Since moving to Pahrump, we have more time, more interest, so we’ve turned it into a home-based business idea,” he said.

On Oct. 19, the Wakefields had a ribbon-cutting event at their property, put on by the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce. The event was done to welcome the couple to the chamber as new members.

In attendance was Donna Corey, event coordinator for the chamber; 2017 Ms. Senior Golden Years USA Pageant winner Maryellen Swarowski; and several others, to help celebrate the opening and ribbon cutting.

After the ribbon cutting, a look inside of the space outside the Wakefield’s home revealed Southwestern-style pottery, jewelry and more. The shop also carries hand-woven baskets and rugs.

None of the supply is Native American but has origins throughout several parts of the world.

Inside the Wakefield’s home, Jessica has filled the walls with her original artwork—mainly watercolor paintings. But Jessica also has paintings where she used pastels and other paint types.

Jessica said she started painting in 2008 after taking an adult enrichment course.

Her works of art, along with the items in the store in front of the couple’s home, can be viewed Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The couple is offering 10 percent off on all items through the rest of the year in celebration of the holiday season.

Shoppers can also set up an appointment at hours outside that range by calling 1-480-619-9088.

Silver State Traders can also be found on Facebook by searching Silver State Traders Pahrump on the social media site.

For those who don’t want to come out to the Wakefield’s home, the couple offers shipping.
