Pahrump man, 78, dies in dump truck crash

A 78-year-old Pahrump man is dead following a single-vehicle rollover crash.

The Nevada Highway Patrol identified Donovan Bockstader as the driver and sole occupant of the commercial dump truck.

An NHP media release stated Bockstader was driving a white Freightliner dump truck westbound on Bell Vista Avenue just east of Spring Meadow Road, just before 6:30 a.m., July 19.

Loss of control

“The driver allowed the truck to cross the centerline and eastbound travel lane into the native desert terrain south of the highway,” the release stated. “The truck continued southwest, rotated clockwise, and overturned. The unrestrained 78-year-old male driver of the truck succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene.”

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Services Chief Scott Lewis said his crews were also dispatched to the scene.

“After crews arrived on location, the scene assessment revealed the vehicle was a large commercial truck used to haul gravel,” Lewis said. “The occupant was found entrapped, however, the patient did not survive his injuries. Crews remained on location while the Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nye County Sheriff’s Office conducted their investigation and later recovered the driver’s body.”

After further investigation, it was discovered Bockstader was traveling from Pahrump to Amargosa Valley.

The crash marks NHP Southern Command’s 35th fatal crash this year, resulting in 37 fatalities.
