Pahrump Valley High School is welcoming a guest instructor to the campus today.
Downtown Michael Brown, saxophonist for the legendary group Sha Na Na, will speak to students about melanoma skin cancer, which took the life of his wife Amanda more than 10 years ago.
Brown calls his presentations, “Amanda’s Message” tours as he travels around teaching middle schools and high schools about skin cancer awareness.
He’s scheduled to visit the school from 8 a.m. to noon today.
“I lost my beloved wife, Amanda Brown, to melanoma skin cancer and since that horrible day, I will continue our fight to stop melanoma in its tracks,” he said. “Every hour in the U.S., we lose another life to melanoma.
“More than likely the victims are in their 20s, and almost every death could have been prevented if they just knew what to do,” Brown said. “I’m not stopping because I’m not going to let melanoma skin cancer take one more life without a fight. I’m keeping my promise to my wife to spread the message, which I can, Amanda’s message.”
Brown also noted that he regularly travels throughout Nevada to deliver Amanda’s message.
“I’m pretty much a one-man show,” he said. “I do the phone calls and get right in there to do what I have to do. I will be visiting as many middle and high schools as I can here in town and in Las Vegas. I’ll even travel out to places such as Beatty if I have to. Melanoma skin cancer can and will kill you if you don’t catch it early enough.”
