A new business in a newly built 1,800-square-foot building on the main road through town opened its doors last week.
O.U. Nuts began operations at 1400 S. Highway 160 and Nevada West Blvd., on Feb. 14.
Owners Ron “O.U.” and Meili Thaxton, owners of O.U. Nuts Farm, said business was good during the first week.
The couple began farming in the Pahrump Valley back in 1998 when they planted a grove of pistachio trees on North Blagg Road. The orchard sits on 18 acres.
The couple acquired the 1.7 acres of raw land fronting Highway 160 in 2014, but didn’t begin building the store until last summer.
Previously, O.U. Nuts had been selling their products from the farm on site, at local retail stores and at various special events in town, including the farmers market in the parking lot of Draft Picks.
“My husband and I have lived in Pahrump for a long time and we know a lot of people,” Meili Thaxton said. “We would also sell our nuts and produce at the farmers market. We are a family farm that grows many types of nuts and vegetables. We have different flavored pistachios from onion garlic to jalapeno, as well as the raw pistachios. This farm grows all its crops with love.”
Nuts and produce aside, the business also sells a variety of collectibles and other items.
The store hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The couple works on their farm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thaxton said the present hours could eventually change. Additionally, Thaxton said the business has space for another tenant on the property.
“We have an additional 800 square-feet if someone wants to rent that space,” she said. “We have had a lot of people inquiring about that.”
