Motor vehicle collisions dominated the majority of emergency service calls for area first responders over the weekend.
On Friday, Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Lewis said crews were dispatched to southbound Highway 160 in Clark County for a single-vehicle rollover crash just after 7 a.m.
“One patient was removed from the vehicle and we managed a landing zone for incoming Mercy Air-21,” he said. “Patient care was transferred to Mercy Air-21, who then flew that patient to UMC Trauma in Las Vegas.”
Roughly an hour later, Lewis said fire crews were summoned to First and West streets following reports of a motorcyclist down on the roadway.
“Upon arrival, we found that instead of a motorcycle, the rider was actually on a moped,” Lewis said. “The moped rider had a near-collision with a vehicle that reportedly sped off and the rider was tossed from the moped and landed on his head. The rider met Mercy Air flight criteria but we had just utilized the helicopter for the previous call and they had not returned.”
Lewis noted the rider was then transported to Desert View Hospital by medics and was later flown to UMC Trauma in Las Vegas with head trauma.
Just two hours later on Friday, Pahrump fire crews responded to another rollover crash along West Bell Vista Road near Ash Meadows.
The crash, Lewis said, involved a full-size motorhome.
“Upon arrival, we found what is described as a Class-A motorhome, which tumbled about 30 feet down into a ravine,” he said. “The sole operator of the vehicle had self-extricated and climbed up to the roadway. He was shaken, but uninjured. Crews remained on location for a short duration to await the tow truck’s arrival to remove that vehicle.”
On Saturday, fire crews were dispatched to the 900 block of East Daytona Street for numerous reports of a brush fire in the area.
Lewis said upon their arrival, crews found a brush fire encircling a utility pole.
“That fire was quickly contained and it was determined that a bird had contacted the energized lines and landed on the ground which set the brush on fire,” he said. “All of the nearby exposures were protected and there were no reported injuries.”
The track at the Spring Mountain Motor Sports facility was the scene of a motorcycle crash late Sunday morning.
“Upon arrival we met with their crew who did an outstanding job assisting us in getting to the patient,” Lewis said. “They established a safe area with us to land Mercy Air-24, and that patient was transported to UMC Trauma in Las Vegas. We also experienced numerous service calls for medical transports throughout the weekend.”
