Nye County commissioners approved filling a new position in the sheriff’s department, eliminating the vacant admin tech/grant administrator in the process.
County Manager Pam Webster said the move just diverts one position to creating another.
“We have a grants administrator position in finance and one of the issues was moving these grants over there to manage and that was the sheriff’s intention,” Webster said. “This position could be put in to manage the administrative staff that is in place, or supervise it, and still be a working supervisor for that group, and put the grants administration back where it would be good to have it.”
Sheriff’s office clerical staff lost multiple personnel over the last two years by attrition and by design, officials said. On Aug. 12, the administrative technician/grant person retired, leaving that position unfilled.
A 90-day freeze on hiringthe allowed the county to save $25,195. However, there will be no additional savings to the county from the move and the funding will be a wash, officials said.
The approved position will fill an office supervisor, clerical command support and a grant administrator. It will be funded by the money that was allocated for the former administrative technician/grant administrator.
“What this also does is pulls out another deputy and sends that deputy back to work,” Nye County Commissioner Frank Carbone said.
The supervising administrator for the Nye County Sheriff’s Office requires an individual to supervise administrative technicians and manage front offices throughout the county within the sheriff’s office, and assist in the procurement and administration of grants, according to the documents.
The employee will be involved in the day-to-day coordination of the Nye County Employee Association contract and Nye County Law Enforcement Association contract implementation and negotiations and will oversee purchasing, accounting, budget preparation and expenditures while providing clerical support for command staff.
