Firefighters were able to save a local family’s home from going up in smoke after a fire broke out in a second building on their property Wednesday morning.
Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Services and Nye County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched after 11 a.m. for a report of a structure fire on a property near the intersection of Savannah and Plantation streets.
When they arrived, firefighters found one structure on the property fully engulfed in flames as well as another nearby metal building; it appeared the fire had begun to spread as well.
Firefighters were able to quickly get the flames under control and keep them from extending to the main residence.
Both buildings affected by the fire, however, appeared to have been severely damaged by the flames.
A neighbor who came to the scene to see what was going on said the family who owned the property had a small leather working business they ran out of one of the two structures damaged in the fire.
It was said the family’s equipment used in their business was not insured.
PVFRS Fire Chief Scott Lewis said upon further investigation it appeared the fire was accidental in nature and possibly caused by a wood-burning stove that was left unattended.
A report was submitted to the State Fire Marshal’s office for review.
Deputies kept most of East Savannah Street near the residence blocked off that morning as firefighters battled the flames and conducted their investigation.
