VEA gifts senior centers with power

Senior centers throughout Nye County have received an early holiday gift from Valley Electric Association; free electric for the month of December.

Executive Vice-President of Energy Services Chris Brooks said that power generated from Valley Electrics’s renewable energy solar test center, located on Highway 372 in Pahrump, was delivered to the association’s charitable foundation which provided the basis for the donation to the local senior centers.

Senior centers that benefited from the power donation are: Pahrump Senior Center; Amargosa Senior Center and the Beatty Senior Center in Nye County; the Fish Lake Valley Community Center in Esmeralda County and the Sandy Valley Senior Center in Clark County.

The senior center energy donation program has been operational since 2012, Brooks said. The program is one way to recognize the community resource that senior centers provide in Valley Electric’s service area, he said. That program is just one of the ways the association gives back to local communities.

There are over 50 organizations the company donates to throughout the year.

In addition to the senior center donation program, Valley Electric coordinates a large donation program each year called “Fill the Bucket Truck.” The event benefits local school-aged children with school supplies. The 2014 event, Brooks said, provided 450 cubic feet of school supplies to students, beating the record set in 2013.

Brooks said the association is a member-owned cooperative committed to involvement in the communities that it serves, and offers a variety of scholarships and assistance programs for members.
