Reader tells residents how to deal with cinch bug invasion

We were inundated with cinch bugs Friday morning, May 13.

Upon calling a business here in town for help, I was told nothing would kill them and to use the hose and a high-pressure nozzle. We did this but to no avail.

Sunday morning we got the propane weed burner out and have had very few bugs since.

Parent of Special Olympics athlete thanks sheriff’s office

As a parent of a Special Olympian and on behalf of the 25 athletes who participated in this year’s Law Enforcement Torch Run, I would like to thank the Sheriff Sharon Wehrly and the deputies of Nye County Sheriff’s Office who acted as guardians of the Flame and helped our athletes carry the Flame of Hope on its 3.3 mile journey from the government center to the sheriffs office.

Although called a run, the deputies made sure every athlete felt very special as they had an opportunity to carry the torch during the run at their own pace.

Many of our athletes couldn’t run/walk the whole 3.3 miles. But in honor of the Athletes Oath, “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt,” all started the run with the hope and dreams of champions.

So in this spirit, the deputies took a rest break at the old DMV office and when everyone reached this point they finished the run as champions, as their smiles said it all.

This event kicks off the journey of the torch that makes it way from the Hoover Dam to the opening of the Summer Games in Reno on Friday, June 3rd where athletes from Pahrump Special Olympics will compete for the gold in track and field.

Funds raised from these events statewide help get the over 400 athletes to the summer games.

So once again, thank you so much, Nye County Sheriff’s Office and all who gave to this special cause.

Respectfully,

J. Soltz
