The folly of reducing Social Security income
Some Republicans in Congress, like Senator Lindsey Graham, advocate reducing Social Security income for retirees by means testing (people get less or none if you don’t need it) or by increasing the retirement age to 67 as a method of reducing the national deficit, suggesting that Social Security is government welfare. Nothing could be further from the truth!
When I worked for General Motors I remember Social Security withholding to be big enough that I felt it and that General Motors matched it with each paycheck received. None of this was government money and none of us believed that government would squander it away and replace it with a debt.
Senator Lindsey Graham served 30 years in the military and retired as a high-ranking officer. To my knowledge he did not pay into his guaranteed military retirement and no one has suggested that means testing should be applied to his case, or that he should have waited until he was 67 before getting his military retirement.
Social Security was private money which was seized by our government and replaced with a debt and now some of the Republicans are trying to welch on part of our debt. May be nice work for them if they can get it, but I don’t think America will stand for it.
