The Trojans baseball team played in a three-game tournament at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas called the “Cowboy Classic”, which ended last Wednesday. Pahrump Valley (6-7 overall, 1-1 Sunset League) went 2-2 in the tourney.
Last Monday the team beat Valley (1-7, 0-2 Sunrise League Division I) 8-1 and then Tech (4-6, 2-0 Sunrise League Division I-A) 15-3. On Tuesday the team lost to Canyon Springs (4-7, 0-3 Sunrise League Division I) 13-8 and on Wednesday the team lost to Desert Pines (5-6, 0-2 Sunrise League Division I-A) 11-10.
Trojans coach Brian Hayes said his team started the tournament well.
“We played some great baseball on Monday, beating Valley and Tech,” the coach said. “Our pitchers (Kyle Kral and Garret Lucas) did an excellent job of throwing strikes and mixing up their pitches and our defense made plays and we hit the ball well.”
Hayes said his team looked like a different team in the last two games.
“Our pitchers had trouble throwing strikes (we walked six on Tuesday and seven on Wednesday), and our defense fell apart,” he said. “Offensively, we scored runs, but struggled to get the big hit with runners in scoring position. We need to have some good practices this week and Monday in order to have a chance next week against Spring Valley and Sierra Vista. We need some of our guys to step up both offensively and defensively or it will be a long season.”
Despite the two losses in the tournament, the Trojans bats seem to be coming alive. The team average was .288 last week and is now .307 and climbing.
The Trojans have a few days off to reorganize and get ready for Tuesday’s game against Spring Valley (7-3, 2-0), which was past deadline. The team will play Sierra Vista(4-8,2-0) today at 3:30 p.m.
The team wants the fans to know that they will be hosting a benefit game through the “Go 4 the Goal Cancer Foundation”. The foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of children battling cancer by providing financial support, developing and implementing unique hospital programs, funding innovative research, and granting personal wishes.
The game will be April 7 against Mojave High School.
“All of the money we raise will go to benefit baby Myla, an 11-month-old baby girl who is battling brain cancer,” Hayes said. “Her parents are Stevie Miller and Chase Parks of Pahrump. In addition, The Trojans are also having senior/little league day on April 15 at 3:30 (little leaguers get in free if they wear their jersey), and a military appreciation game on May 4 at 3:30 (veterans get in free).
