The Trojans baseball team was coming off a successful weekend trip down to Mohave, Arizona where they played five games, winning three and losing two when they played Western on Monday.
The Trojans (8-3 overall, 1-0 Sunset League) had little trouble with the Warriors, (0-5 overall, 0-1 Sunset League) routing them 16-1.
On Thursday afternoon Pahrump played Lake Havasu and lost 12-1. That evening they played Mingus and lost 10-2.
Trojans Coach Brian Hayes said they faced the two toughest teams of the tournament that day.
“Both teams played solid fundamental baseball,” he said. “Havasu had a hard throwing pitcher and hit the ball very well, while Mingus was a very well coached team. We had a couple of rough innings defensively which led to the lopsided scores.”
On Friday, the team got back on track and won their first game of the tournament against Bagdad 10-9.
“After another sloppy game against Bagdad, we played solid baseball against Page and River Valley,” Hayes said. “Our pitching was solid all weekend, our defense was up and down, and our hitting is starting to come around.”
On Friday evening, the team beat Page 5-1 and on Saturday they beat River Valley 10-5.
The Western game started off with Kyle Kral retiring the side in order at the top of the first.
The Trojans then came up and sent 15 batters to the plate. In that inning the Western pitcher walked four batters, and gave up eight hits, two of those hits were doubles.
Dylan Ault hit a double with one on and Carlos Rivera hit another one, scoring two. In all, 10 runs scored in the first.
In the second inning, the Trojans scored four more runs on a sacrifice, a hit and three errors by the Warriors. The team scored their last two runs in the third.
In that inning, Josh Mortensen got his third hit. He scored all three times he was at bat.
The pitching and defense was also superb. Kral retired the first two innings. He had one bad inning where he faced seven batters.
The defense looked superb and had a double play in the second inning and catcher Carlos Rivera threw out a runner in the first trying to steal second. The game was called in the fifth due to 10-run mercy rule.
