Basketball camp coming to the Pahrump Valley

Basketball players getting ready for next year, grab your gym shoes and get ready to play some hoops.

For those parents who have basketball players, both boys and girls from ages 6-18, the Coach Gil Llewellyn Game Time Basketball Camp returns to Pahrump from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from June 12-15 at the Pahrump Valley High School gym at 501 E. Calvada Blvd.

This camp used to be available only in Las Vegas, but Alicia Lewis, a longtime supporter of the camp, changed the mind of the director and brought it out here. The camp is now in its third year in Pahrump.

Founder, coach Gil Llewellyn, and coach Trey Putnam, along with some of their top coaches, who were at one time professional players, will instruct the kids on the foundations of the game.

“Whether you are coming from out of town, and/or want to take a break, or you’re a local, or you want them to benefit from a big-time camp instructional experience brought right to your front door, specifically brought in because of the demand of several local parents, we look forward to serving you. We provide a transformative basketball camp experience that is tailored to all ages and abilities, following a progressive system of instruction.”

He further adds, “We cover the fundamentals of the game, not limited to just ball-handling, shooting, rebounding, passing, defensive fundamentals. foundational footwork, spacing, angles, positioning, mindset, teamwork, but even to the more intricate nuances by position, as the player and person become ready for further learning and growth and a greater appreciation for the game of basketball, and the bigger game of life.”

Pahrump Valley High School student, Quiandra Lewis said she went last year and it was worth her time.

“I learned foot movements, how to use your legs to shoot, better defensive techniques, and a lot of ball-handling techniques,” she said. “The coaches are patient and it was worth the money.”

Danny Washum, another Pahrump Valley High School student, also went to the camp.

“We worked on a lot of fundamentals like dribbling, shooting and passing,” he said.

“All the fundamentals needed to become a good basketball player. He knows what he is doing and is a former professional basketball player.”

Prices for the camp are: one day $45, two days $85, three days $120, four days $145.

Note: Athletes should be aware that camps like this are rare in Pahrump Valley and if they are to continue, they need to be well attended.
