The Beatty women’s track team came close to a repeat, but came up 10 points short to take a disappointing 2nd place. Beatty finished at 104 points to Sierra Lutheran’s 114. If only a couple of events had gone to Beatty, the Hornets would be champions. The Hornets will have to wait until next year. By next year their long distance runners will be unbeatable.
The celebrated Beatty freshman Jasmin Pelayo won her first individual state championship in the 3,200-meter run (13:00.73). Zuri Pimentel took 3rd in that event (13:13.91). Pelayo broke the 6-minute mark for the first time and ran 5:55.73 to take 2nd in the 1,600. She lost to Deseret Johnson of Wells.
She finished 3rd in the 800 losing to Johnson again. Pelayo has three more years to get this right and if she does she can easily take home three individual medals and one team medal. Also in the 800 Ashley Granados took 7th place and Sinai Hernandez took 8th.
The Lady Hornets 4×800-meter relay finished 2nd 11:19.73. The team consisted of Ashley Granados, Pimentel, Pelayo and Alyssa Martin.
The Beatty jumpers came close to winning it for Beatty. Christina Thompson took third in the long jump with a 15-04 jump and she missed taking first in the triple jump by just 9 inches (32-00.5). The winner of the triple jump was Kellie Rogaczewski of Smith Valley who jumped a 32-08.75. If Rogaczewski misses, and Pelayo takes first in the 800 or 1,600, Beatty is champion. That is how close the meet was.
The girls will be better next year as the sprinters also will get better. Vanessa Gamboa and Alexi Gil finished 6th and 7th in the 100 meter and 200 meter and are both freshmen.
For the boys, they finished in 5th place with 62 points total. Sierra Lutheran finished on top with 129 points.
In the 800, Enrique Orozco finished in 4th place with a 2:10.98 time. Mark Waite of Whittell took 1st with a 2:00.21 time. Orozco did better in the 1,600-meter run with a 2nd place showing and a time of 4:57.69. Again Waite of Whittell took 1st place (4:53.34).
In the 3,200, Michele Grisafi took 4th place (11:33.47) and he lost to Cole Snyder of Whittell (10:53.99). Grisafi went on to take 3rd in the 300 hurdles with a 45.64 time.
The Hornets 4×100 relay team took 4th place (50.65). The team consisted of Isaias Femat, Juan Cimental, Matt Woods and Jhonpaul Adajar. The 4×800 relay team of Brandon Rebujio, Brandon Cross, Grisafi, and Nahum Favela took 5th place (9:45.09)
In field events, Lorenzo Pinion took 6th place (38-05.50) and 4th in the discus with a throw of 114-07. Orozco took 5th in the pole vault (8-06) and Nate Russell took 6th with the same vault.
In long jump, Adajar took 6th place (17-10.25) and Michael Olson took 8th place.
