The Hornets football program has a new football coach as the Robertson era came to an end. James Robertson called it quits and Leo Verzilli took back the reins of the team after a two-year absence as head coach. Last year Verzilli was an assistant coach.
The Zamora era also came to an end last year, as the last of the Zamora brothers, Nick, graduated, which means the Hornets are looking for a quarterback.
I am looking closely at Jacob Henry, a sophomore as QB, Verzilli said. He played last year against Alamo and did well.
The last two years of Beatty football have been good ones as they have been to the playoffs for the past two years.
Verzilli said the program should continue to be successful.
The return of Verzilli means that the Hornets will still be running the ball.
I like running a power I, he said. Really with our running attack, the QB doesnt have to throw far.
This means the team will have two running backs. Usually the power I will have a pulling guard and a fullback making a big hole in the line for a quick back to follow.
Hugo Mendoza will be back as the fullback, but Jhonpaul Adujar will not be returning. Senior Robby Revert will anchor the line along with possible returnees Luis Rodriquez and Mariano Villa to name a few.
As far as not having Adujar, we will miss him, but we have some speed coming back to the team. Michael Olson will be back.
Verzilli said his teams heat acclimatization starts this week. The Beatty fall sports took physicals through Affiliated Chiropractic on Monday with Doctor Michael Taylor.
The team also returns to the football field after a two-year absence. The field was reseeded by the Nye County School District two years ago and has been nursed back to health.
