The Beatty track team was at the Meadows Weekday in Las Vegas on Tuesday where they competed with Division III and Division IV schools. Eight schools competed on the boys side and seven on the girls side.
Beatty took fourth place (86) in the boys, finishing behind Lincoln County (87), The Meadows (90.5) and Spring Mountain (146.5). The girls finished in second place (96) behind the Meadows and Lincoln County came in third with 93 points.
The team also competed in the bigger Arbor View meet that had 37 teams competing, which was last Friday.
The invitational was the last big meet of the year and the largest of the year with 37 teams competing.
The Hornets competed against Division I, I-A, III and IV schools.
Coach Ellice Dunsterville said this was the last competition where her team would have to compete against the bigger schools.
“Overall, I was pleased with my team at the Arbor View meet,” the coach said. “They enjoyed competing against so many other teams in all of the divisions.”
She said her team also did fairly well at the Meadows meet too.
“As far as our meet Tuesday at The Meadows, I was pleased with everyone’s work and effort,” Dunsterville said. “We were able to see more of Spring Mountain and Quest.”
For the boys in the sprinting events at the Meadows meet, senior Luis Flores took sixth in the 400 (1:00).
Junior Enrique Orozco returned. He took third in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 26.30 seconds) and first in the 1,600 (5:13.20).
Sophomore Brandon Rebujio helped Orozco out in the 1,600, taking third place.
Michael Olson finished in third in the triple jump (36 feet, 5.5 inches).
Dunsterville said her boys team was only one point from finishing in fourth at Meadows.
For the second place girls at the Meadows they did well in the sprinting events, taking fourth through seventh in the 100. Sophomore Vanessa Gamboa took fourth (16.10), sophomore Rosa Gutierrez took fifth (16.5), freshman Clara Garcia took sixth (17.7) and sophomore Abby Panlaqui took seventh (17.8).
In the 200, Gutierrez took fifth (34.70) and Panlaqui took seventh (37.60).
Sophomore Jasmine Pelayo took fifth in the 800 (4:12.9) and she took first in the 1,600 (6:07.5).
The coach was pleased with how Pelayo did at Arbor View and at the Meadows.
“Jasmine’s times are a little slower than last year at Arbor View (this year 6:18 at Arbor View), but I am pleased with her progress this year,” Dunsterville said. “She is currently in third place in Division IV for state, and I know she is capable of improving in the weeks leading up to state.”
Pelayo also took third in the 3,200 (13:37.6) at the Meadows.
Garcia took third in the 300 hurdles (1:09.9 and Panlaqui took fourth (1:10).
Beatty’s Alexi Gil took second in the shot put (24-11) and first in the triple jump (25-09).
Beatty will compete in the Boulder City small schools meet on May 1 and that will be the last regular meet of the season.
Dunsterville said she will use the Boulder City meet “to finalize which team members will be participating in events for district.”
