The Beatty track team traveled to the Liberty Invitational on March 19 in Las Vegas. There were 15 boys teams and 13 girls teams. The invitational allowed the team to run against some of the best Division I teams in Las Vegas.
Hornets coach Ellice Dunsterville is excited about the team and their performance.
“This track season is going to be a great year,” the coach said. “Most of my team from last year returned this year and we have quite a few freshmen and a few other new faces. We have 36 on the team this year and already personal records are being set and beaten, and we are even looking at challenging our school records as well. I am excited to see how all the kids will succeed in their events. It is always a joy to watch their faces when they do really well.”
Dunsterville said her staff from last year is returning. Lorraine Gjefle is back as assistant coach, working with the shot put and discus, and Richard Dunsterville is also back as an assistant coach working with pole vault, hurdles and wherever else he is needed.
The coach said her team should do well against Tonopah this year.
“It will be an exciting season to see who comes out on top,” Dunsterville said. “We thrive on the competition between us.”
Although the Beatty boys team scored only one point, the boys did well against other Division IV schools.
In the 200-meter run, Jacob Oseguera finished 36th (26.13 seconds), beating two Pahranagat Valley runners who were 37th and 38th.
Enrique Orozco finished 35th (2:28.08) and Brandon Rebujio finished 37th in the 800 meter. The two runners were the top Division IV runners in this event. In the 1,600 meter, Orozco finished in 33rd (5:35.51) and Rebujio was 36th (5:37.30). The two were also the top Division IV runners in this event.
In the 3,200 meter event Rebujio finished 21st (12:57.04) and was the only Division IV runner.
Christian Donaldson finished 25th (53.97) in the 300-meter hurdles and was the only Division IV runner.
In the 4×200-meter relay, the Hornets finished 10th- 1:40.84 (Nahum Favela, Michael Olson, Jacob Oseguera, Nate Russell) and beat Rival Tonopah (1:41.84), who finished 11th.
Robby Revert finished 27th (32 feet, 5 inches) behind Tonopah’s thrower Jordan Berkowitz, who finished 25th (33-10).
In the high jump, Yadir Rodriquez finished 18th (5-2) behind Tonopah’s Tyler Kirkland, who finished 12th (5-08).
Olson jumped a (17-03) to finish 19th and was the best jumper from Division IV.
In Beatty girls track, the team finished behind Tonopah (1).
In the 100 meter, Vanessa Gamboa had the best Beatty time (14.76), finishing 35th. Gamboa had the best Beatty time in the 200, finishing 30th (30.63). Alexi Gil finished 9th in the shot put (29-03) and had the best Division IV throw.
In the discus, Ariana Oseguera finished 25th (66-06) behind Tonopah’s thrower Aimee Thompson (72-11).
In the Long Jump, Alexi Gil finished 19th (12-00.5) just behind Tonopah’s Elle Snyder (12-02).
The following schools were Division I: Silverado, Liberty, Las Vegas, Arbor View, Desert Oasis, Shadow Ridge, Valley and Foothill. The following were Division I-A schools: Desert Pines, Mojave, Boulder City and Pahrump Valley. Lincoln County was the only Division III school. Tonopah, Pahranagat Valley and Beatty were the only Division IV teams.
