Beatty shooters head down to the shooting range. VFW Post 12108 is seeking out the town’s best shooters for a contest on March 19 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
The contest will benefit the VFW community fund. “The community fund is used when someone is in need,” Karl Olson, a spokesperson for the VFW said.
Olson said the event will held at the shooting range just north of the town near the Beatty Airport.
The shooting will be organized into two types of contests.
The first one has two options, people can shoot a rifle at 100 yards and the other option is a pistol at 20 yards. Shooters can stand, sit or kneel and the cost is $2 per shot. The target is a clay pigeon. Shoot the pigeon and win a ham.
For the contest the VFW post has ordered 100 hams.
The other contest is a group event and costs $20 per shooter.
“You are competing in a group,” Olson said. “You need a minimum of three people and a maximum of five to do this one. It is a bench rest competition. You get three shots: one at 200, one at 300 and one at 500 yards. The best shot of the group wins a ham and a monetary prize.”
The minimum age for participation is 12 years old. He said all minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Olson said this is the only contest of its kind in the county.
“I think there was one during Thanksgiving at one time by the Lions Club,” he said. “This is a first for the VFW.”
The post will also be selling hot dogs and hamburgers at the range.
Olson said the other goal is to hopefully have other shooting events in the county.
“We want to promote responsible shooting,” he said.
