The Trojans boys basketball team went up against the number one team in the Sunset League, Faith Lutheran and lost 68-39. Although it was a loss, the Trojans (0-11 overall, 0-8 Sunset League) have made some progress on the court.
Last Friday the boys just didn’t go on the court to lose. They played with heart and sheer determination and if they keep playing like that, they will win some games by the time the season is out.
Faith Lutheran (12-5, 6-0) came into the game after beating Clark in a close game 66-61 and the victory gave them top dog in the Sunset League. Their team revolves around the shooting of their big man, 6-6 forward, John Molchon and his rebounding.
At the half the score was 37-11, it looked as if the Trojans were going down big. At the end of the second quarter, the Crusaders had outrebounded the Trojans 11-1. In addition they were shooting 100 percent at the end of the second while Pahrump had five attempts with no scoring.
In the third quarter the Trojans showed the Crusaders that they were not going to just give them the game. They scored 13 points to their 14 points and in the rebound department Pahrump was able to keep pace with Faith, who had 17 rebounds (unofficial count) to Pahrump’s 11. The Trojans increased their scoring in the second half and doubled what they scored in the first half, 23 points to 11. Of course, by that time the Crusaders had built up a 20 point lead.
TJ Milk led the team in scoring with 12 points and Daniel Foss was next with 10 points.
Nevertheless, Trojans Coach John Toomer did see some improvement.
“We just need to make a few more baskets,” he said.
The Trojans are playing tougher than they were at the beginning of the season. They are still looking for their first league win. The team is at Sierra Vista (10-9, 3-5) on Thursday.
Action for the boys starts at 6:30 p.m. In their first meeting with the Mountain Lions, the Trojans got blown out 66-24. This should not be the case the second time around.
Look for the boys to put more points on the board and if Sierra Vista is not careful the Trojans could get their first league win.
The Lady Trojans (2-13, 0-8) lost ugly to Faith Lutheran (13-3, 6-0) 65-23. Faith is the number two team in the Sunset League behind Spring Valley (18-1, 7-0). The Crusaders went up against the Grizzlies for the first time this season on Tuesday night.
The top scorer for Pahrump was Shayla Dance with 6 points, followed by Alyssa Murphy with 5 points. Murphy is the lead scorer overall and averages 9.54 points per game while Dance is next, averaging 7.4 points per game.
Jill Smith leads the team in rebounds with 81 and she is followed by Shayla Dance with 71.
The team is at Sierra Vista (5-14, 1-7) on Thursday. Action for the girls starts at 5 p.m.
The girls could very well get their first league win this Thursday if they can play a complete game. In their first meeting, the Lady Trojans got outscored in the first half.
If they want to beat the Mountain Lions the second time around they need to make sure they score throughout the game.
