The Trojans volleyball program has a new coach, Angelica Sugar (formerly Angelica Villa), who is the new freshman volleyball coach.
Sugar is a graduate of the class of 2007 at PVHS and was a member of the volleyball team when they went to the state playoffs in 2005 and 2007 under current coach Jill Harris.
Sugar replaces Gail Mills, who had coached for over a decade.
“She had a lot of talent,” Harris said. “She does what I ask her to do and I am sure she will be able to prepare these freshmen for the junior varsity or varsity squad next year.”
When Sugar played for PVHS she was a three-sport athlete, playing basketball and softball too. In basketball she was on the state championship basketball team and state champion softball team.
Sugar attended the University of Nevada Reno, where she got her teaching credentials and now teaches Spanish at the high school. She coached one year of volleyball at Rosemary Clarke Middle School.
“I love having a lot of my kids that I teach on my team,” she said. “I am also getting some of the kids that I coached in middle school. I have 13 girls.”
A big test for Sugar will be on Sept. 4 when her girls will go up against the junior varsity team at the Harvey Gonzalez tournament in Tonopah.
One of the her goals is to teach the girls the importance of teamwork and that there is no “one woman show” at the high school level.
“I will do my best to improve,” Sugar said. “I am doing this for the girls and hopefully they will all improve on their serving and be serving overhand when they leave me.”
This coaching is all new to the young coach.
“I never thought I would be coaching at my old high school,” she said. “I thought I would be living up in Reno still. I enjoyed the cool weather up north, but all my family is down here.”
