Dance team takes first place at regionals

At the home basketball games and the football games you always see the dance team performing, and yes they do other things. One of those things they do is enter competitions.

The Trojans dance team finished in first place in the Hip Hop category and first place in the Jazz category for the small schools at the USA Las Vegas Classic Southern Regional High School Dance Competition, which was held at Desert Oasis High School on Saturday.

Trojans Coach Terri Wulfenstein said because of the girls’ efforts, the team will be going to the national competition on March 20 in Anaheim. This will be the third year in a row that the Trojans have attended this competition. The team will be competing in the same categories.

“This is the best we have ever done. It is the first time that we ever placed first at regionals. In the past, the best we have done is third place,” Wulfenstein said.

Denise Rhodes is the mother of Senior Terryn Thomas, a dance team member. Rhodes says her daughter works extremely hard at dance.

“I am extremely proud of my daughter’s accomplishments on the team,” Rhodes said. “My daughter would go to the gym and practice for two more hours after a two-hour practice at school and she is always practicing at home.”

Rhodes said her daughter started her freshman year with the cheer team.

“She would watch the dance girls perform and always admired them for their talent,” she said. “Then as a junior she was asked to join the dance team. Terryn is very athletic. She plays softball and soccer. In fact, as a senior she was the only senior to make the varsity team, having no high school experience.”

Cali Lane and Rachel Maughan did the choreography for the jazz portion and Bri Sorenson from Precision Dance Camps choreographed the Hip Hop routine. Wulfenstein is assisted on the dance floor by Judy Maughan.
