Gene Goins Memorial Golf Tourney closes out summer

Twenty-four junior golfers braved the heat at the two-day 16th annual Gene Goins Memorial Golf Tournament last week at Mountain Falls.

The Goins tournament was the final Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association tournament of the season.

The high school division was won by Derek Moore, who carded a 158.

For the boys 12-14 division, Joey Kocvara carded a 117. Carter Nygaard took the boys 9-11 year old division. Shaydo Three Stars won the girls 9-11 Division, carding a 118. Sedona Skinner took the girls 8 and under, carding a 126. In the boys 8 and under, Caden Briscoe took first place, carding an 82.

Director of golf for the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association Frank Cox said he is excited by some of the boys coming up.

“Caden Briscoe (9) and his brother Cameron (10), Carter Nygaard (9) and Joe Mule (10) are looking good,” Cox said. All competed well last week and are an interesting group. Especially if they stay together in high school. They all have the ability to be good golfers.”

Cox said Carter Nygaard went to all his sister’s tournaments during the summer.

“Carter Nygaard is working hard and he’s making big strides,” the coach said.

Lori Hopkins, the mother of the Briscoe clan says that her two younger boys are competitive when it comes to golf. All the boys started playing golf at four years old.

“Caden has the athletic ability but likes baseball,” the mother said. “Cameron will probably stick the golf out. He loves the sport.”
