Girls dominate field events to take meet

The Lady Trojans dominated the field events on Tuesday afternoon and took the home track meet, beating five other schools.

There were four Division I-A schools at the meet, Pahrump, Clark, Western and Spring Valley and two Division IV Schools, Beatty and Tonopah.

The team finished with 178 points, Clark took second (125 points), Spring Valley took third (76), Beatty took fourth (40), Tonopah took fifth (18) and Western took sixth (15).

The girls took four first places in the field events. In the discus, sophomore Madison Shay took first place (77 feet, 10 inches), sophomore Caeli Havel took third (72-07) and freshman Maia Lindsey took sixth place (58-11).

Coach Eric Kunzi said Havel has good technique.

“We are trying to get her into the weight room so she can get stronger and physically throw farther,” Kunzi said. “Her goal in discus is to get 90 feet, which is her best throw.”

In the high jump, freshman Annabelle Brophy took first place (4-06) and sophomore Bethany Calvert took second place (4-06). Trojans Coach Wes Icard said Brophy is getting there in the high jump.

“Brophy took a second place medal in her last competition and she has been getting consistently better all year long,” Icard said.

In the long jump, junior Meghan McDermott took first (14-11) and sophomore Kelsey Souza took fourth place (13-00.75).

McDermott also took first in the triple jump (28-09), Calvert took third (26-01.5) and Brophy took fifth (22-03.75).

The shot put was the only field event the girls didn’t take first in, but they did get second. Havel threw a 28-07.5. In the 100-meter hurdles, McDermott captured her third first place of the day (16.6).

The team also did well in the sprint events. Senior Kelbie Middleton captured first in the 100-meter dash (12.1) and 200 (25.8). Souza helped her out and took third in the 200 (28.9).

Middleton placed second in the 400 (1 minute, 13 seconds), Souza was second (1:13.6) and freshman Sydney Dennis took fourth (1:14).

In the 1,600 the girls did slightly better, junior Fenny Descuatan finished in fifth place (6:34.7). Descuatan says her cross country running gives her endurance and has helped her with her track running.

“In cross country I put in more miles,” she says. “The milage is more and this has helped me for track. Track does make me faster. The cross country running allows me to be more relaxed and not tight during my kick.”

The Trojans did well in the 3,200, sweeping first through third. Dennis took first (16 minutes), Descuatan took second (16:10) and Quiroz took third (16:20). Coach Craig Rieger likes the way Dennis hits the track.

“She has a lot of natural talent,” he said.

For the boys, freshman Bryce Odegard was a big point scorer for the team. He took first in the 1,600 (5:02.5) and was helped by freshman Layron Sonerholm who took third (5:18.2).

Pahrump swept the 3,200 taking first through sixth place. Odegard also took first in that event (13:55), Sonerholm second (13:56), senior Aaron Minjares third (13:58.3).

Pahrump took second through fourth places in the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Dylan Montgomery took second (16.3), sophomore Nik Clark second (16.8) and freshman Jacob Sawain fourth (16.9).

Then in the 300 hurdles Montgomery took second (45.8) and Clark took fourth (48.4).

Freshman Jeremy Albertson took first in the discus, throwing a 103-6. His coach, Kunzi, said Albertson has thrown a 107 and 108 in the discus. His coach said he is not as proficient in the shot put.

“In the shot, he is making the transition from an 8-Pound shot (middle school) to a 10-pound shot,” Kunzi said. “He is throwing 25 now. He is where he should be.”
