Girls Golf Girls finish third; young talent looking promising

The Lady Trojans had their first home league match of the season last Thursday at Mountain Falls. The team finished third out of four teams.

Jayde Woodworth missed another match with a bad case of bronchitis. It is not known when she will be back in the lineup.

Faith Lutheran finished on top with a score of 349, which was one point better than Clark’s 350. Faith’s top golfer, Julia Becker, shot 2-over-par 74. Clark’s top golfers were Grace Kang, who shot a 78 and Sabrina Ho, who carded an 80. The Trojans shot a combined score of 465.

The Lady Trojans top golfers could not break 100 on their home course. Trojans Coach Bob Hopkins had hoped the pressure would be off his players, playing at Las Vegas Municipal two weeks ago and on home ground. He was hoping for some decent scores at home, but it was not to be. “There is not much to say, we played horrible,” Hopkins said.

The Trojans knew it would be a bad day when they had five golfers bogey or worse on hole 8, a short par 3. One Trojan golfer was on the green on one and then three-putted. The best golfer on Thursday finished with a 111 and that was Riley Moore. She was followed by Kellie Hunn, 116 and Shay Neth, 118. Courtney Berry and Natalie Hunn both had bad days with each carding a 122. Krista Toomer shot a 120.

Volunteer Coach Frank Cox, who is also head of the Pahrump Valley Junior Golf, does see some light at the end of the tunnel.

“Yes, they have to putt better, but I think we need to look at this team from a different perspective. Things look bad in the short term, but look at all the young talent we have. There is no way to go but up. I think the girls need more competition and they will improve,” Cox said. The girls are still young with only two seniors on the team. The team has four juniors and five sophomores and two freshmen.

The Trojans have a good crop of young golfers with a lot of talent. If they can shore up the short game, putting and chipping, they will be a strong force in the Division I-A.

Cox said Hopkins had them working hard on these skills in preparation for this week’s match in Las Vegas at Spring Valley’s home course on Thursday.
