Bishop Gorman came to town to test the Trojans golf skills on Tuesday afternoon. Trojans Coach Bob Hopkins said he wanted his girls to work on their short game and approaches to the green.
The Trojans finished decently against the Division I Gorman despite senior Jayde Woodworth starting the match and getting sick. “Young and inexperienced. We will have to improve to challenge Faith or Clark. We played better on Wed. but a much easier course. Hopefully, Jadye will be able to play next week at our home league match. Courtney is playing fine right now. Krista is playing well for a first year player. If we hope to qualify for the regions, we need at least four players averaging 100,” Hopkins said.
The Trojans scored a 450 and the Gaels scored 322. For the day, the Trojans had only one golfer that carded below a 100 and that was Courtney Berry who shot a 96. Krista Toomer had the next lowest score with a 109.
Senior Jayde Woodworth prior to the match said, “I will be working on my putting. As a senior, I have the rest of the game down. My goal is to be in the 80s and maybe the 90s this year.”
Junior Natalie Hunn was also asked about her goals this year. “I want to return to state this year and this year hopefully we can go as a team. I think all aspects of my game are going pretty good. I tend to make little mistakes that throw off my score. We are hoping today to break into the 90s,” Hunn said.
Bishop Gorman Coach Jim Stanfill is in his third year as coach of the Gaels. In his first year he took both men’s and women’s teams to the state tourney. He was happy to make it out to Mountain Falls and believes his team will make state again. “I think we are going to continue building from where we left off last year. We got a third place in state last season. I think we got pretty good opportunity to get back there and improve on that finish,” Stanfill said.
He was asked what he wanted his team to work on against the Trojans and he replied, “We keep a team philosophy of one shot at a time, so I want my girls to work on patience. They need to stay in the moment and not let a six turn into an eight. The round is not over until we pull the ball out on the 18th. We expect to spend 50 percent of practice on the short game. That’s where they are going to save the most amount of shots, and that is where they are going to score.”
On Wednesday, the Trojans had a league match at Las Vegas Municipal. The team did drastically better on the easier course, scoring a 406 and finishing third to Faith Lutheran’s team score of 323 and Clark’s 351. Courtney Berry shot a 94 and then the Trojans had three golfers in the low 100’s: Toomer 106, Riley Moore 102 and Hunn 104.
