The Fall Festival will have a variety of sports venues to watch. There is auto racing and rodeo, but for those that are doers, the people who don’t like to watch, there’s the old-fashioned horseshoe tournament.
Even if you have never played in a horseshoe tournament before, organizer Mike Norton says all are welcome to join in, especially newcomers.
The regional director of the Nevada Horse Pitching Association, Ken Jose, comes to as many tournaments as he can and lives in Tonopah.
“Pahrump has some friendly guys who welcome all,” he said. “Don Brown and Mike Nicosia will talk a lot about anything and are easy guys to approach. I am not sure though about Mike’s hot dogs, but I am safe because the festival should have food too.”
The horseshoe action will take place at Petrack Park between the pool and the fire station.
The tournament is a doubles format, teams, and will be a blind draw for players, double elimination. Blind draw means trying to match players by abilities. There will also be 30-foot groups and 40-foot groups, which is the distance you throw from (30-foot players are men 60 and older and women).
The sign-in is at 9:30 a.m. and the entry fee is $10 per person. The fee includes a small barbecue afterward. The winners will be paid for first, second and third place.
