Things have gone from bad to worse for the Lady Trojans soccer as two more players went down with injuries Tuesday at Sierra Vista.
With Gabby Vasquez already out for the season and Alyssa Turner sidelined with a knee injury, Pahrump Valley (6-3 overall, 3-2 Sunset League) could ill afford more hits to its depth as the team holds on to fourth place in the league.
Pahrump surrendered four second half goals at the Mountain Lions (4-2, 4-2), in the 5-3 loss.
Trojans coach Pam Larmouth said the first half of the game went well for her team, but they were able to score two goals in the first half and the defense was able to hold Sierra Vista to one.
It was during the second half where things went downhill for Pahrump.
Sydney Dennis had to be pulled due to a knee injury she aggravated during the first half, straining an already depleted offense. Dennis has been an integral part of the Trojans’ offense with eight goals and six assists this season.
According to Dennis’s sister Sarah, Sydney will be seeing a doctor this week.
“The knee has bothered my sister for several games now,” Sarah Dennis said. “She plays for two teams and she has stopped playing for her club team in hopes to let it heal. She spent the entire weekend icing it. She is not limping on it and walks fine. It just hurts when she puts pressure on it.”
Then later in the second half the team lost another starter, defender Maddy Pereira.
“(She) fell and hurt her back early in the second half and was injured,” Larmouth said. “We now have three starters out and are scrambling to pull up junior varsity players and keep our team on track,” the coach said.”
Larmouth said two of the Sierra Vista’s goals were scored on questionable penalty kicks. However, the loss of Dennis took away some speed and the ability to pressure the Mountain Lions.
“The effort was there but we were not pressuring the ball nor were we first to the ball,” Larmouth said. “The players did not stop trying though, even when we were behind. I am proud of the effort they showed. Now we will see how we do with our injured players out.”
The Trojans had little time to regroup, having hosted Cheyenne (3-4, 2-4) on Thursday after deadline. Pahrump will travel to league-leading Faith Lutheran (8-3-2, 5-0) Tuesday at 4 p.m.
