In the fifth Pahrump Valley Junior Golf Association summer tourney at Lake View Executive Gold Course, 27 golfers turned out to golf in the blistering heat.
Junior Golf President Frank Cox said the golfers for the most part were handling the heat well.
“It’s been hot lately and we have had a couple of golfers get overheated in the last couple of weeks,” he said. “I have a golf cart filled with water that makes it to all the golfers as they play. Also, the golfers are told that if they get overheated to let us know.”
Junior Golf costs $5 per tournament and there is a $20 Junior Golf registration fee. The age range is from 6-17 and currently the program has 35 to 45 kids participating. Kids can still come out and join in.
This week in the boys 9-11 division Joey Mule took his second summer tournament of the summer and carded a 44.
According to Cox, Mule has been playing golf with Junior Golf for several years now.
“He really has a serious face and comes to play a tournament,” Cox said. “He has a full swing, a good short game and a positive attitude. You can tell he is not out here to fool around. He really looks like he is ready for some serious golf.”
Cox said that having a short game is important and that to have one as young as Mule will really help his game out when he gets to high school.
“One good thing about playing Lake View Executive course is that there is a lot of chipping and putting, which really prepares our young golfers,” he said.
Cox said another golfer that was having a good summer was Senior Trojans golfer, Derek Moore. Moore has been consistently shooting 62 and 63 every time out.
“The par out here is 59 and anytime you are shooting around par, that is a good thing,” Cox said. “I really think Moore will have a good year.”
