The Beatty Hornets women’s basketball team saw its first action over the past weekend at the Lake Mead Classic basketball tourney in Las Vegas, where they went 1-2.
On Wednesday they faced The Meadows from Las Vegas and lost in a close game 46-34. The Meadows had some height and Hornets Coach Aimee Senior said this might have intimidated her team a bit.
“We were dead the first half. Calvary Chapel was taller than Meadows and we played pretty well against them. So I think that height had some impact on them the first half. We scored 7 points in the first half. We weren’t looking inside for our posts and we weren’t taking shots that we had,” she said.
Junior Eaire Davis agrees and said the team came back and played a better second half.
Senior said in the second half the team had a better inside game and worked the ball better and decided to drive and work together as a team.
“The second half we came out playing. We scored 6 points before they scored. We started to box-out and get the rebounds,” she said.
On Friday at the Lake Mead Holiday Classic, the Hornets took the first game against Bishop Gorman’s JV team 28-26. Senior was satisfied with the win.
“It was a good game. The team played hard and well. They ran their offense and played good defense. They attacked the basket well, but we need to work on making the short shots. They played hard this game,” she said.
The team played two games on Friday. Their second game was against Calvary Chapel of San Diego and lost 19-28.
“We were a little tired after playing a hard-fought game in the morning, but they still played pretty well. We had a hard time with the man-to-man defense that they played against us, so that is something we are going to work on. We also need to work on screen-and-roll plays to get open. Once we get open, we’re not afraid to shoot,” the coach explained.
On Saturday the team faced Calvary Chapel of Las Vegas and lost 56-20. Senior said the opposing team had some tall players and good shooters from the outside that would not miss.
“We got to work on inside shooting,” Senior said.
Davis at 5 foot 8 inches tall plays post for the Hornets and is in her third year playing for the team. She is one of two juniors on the team and said the team is lacking in upper classmen because there is only one senior on the team.
“We have a young team and we lack the height but we are pretty quick,” Davis said.
Senior will have to bring the team together if they are to go to the playoffs this year. She feels the team has the shooters, but like Davis said they lack the experience of playing together as a team.
