The Lady Hornets are back on track after going 1-2 at the Round Mountain Tournament just before the holiday break.
Beatty (6-3 overall, 1-0 Division IV Southern) then bounced back, beating Indian Springs at home 40-9 to win their first conference game.
Hornets coach Aimee Senior attributes the win to her hard-working team. She said the tournament was good for her younger players.
“So far, the freshmen, Andrea Leon and Sandra Garcia, and sophomore player Savannah Mell (first year player), have stepped up to the challenge and impressed me,” the coach said. “Games like these give the younger players the varsity playing time they need to improve their game playing at the varsity level.”
At Round Mountain, the team beat Carlin 48-26, lost to Eureka 55-25 and lost to Round Mountain 44-30.
Senior said that Eureka was a good team and they had trouble getting the ball to the basket.
“These are games where we need to work harder and overcome that mental block that shuts us down,” she said. “We had 28 turnovers; the girls got too flustered and we are not settling down to play our game.”
The coach said her team did play well against Round Mountain.
“They have some tall players and they blocked a few of our shots which made us timid to shoot,” Senior said. “So we need to work on fakes and drive around the tall girls, then take our shots.”
This week the team had a field day against Indian Springs and Beatty’s younger players gained valuable experience.
“They have two of their good players out with injuries,” Senior said.
The Hornets travel to Tonopah (1-9, 0-1) tonight, action starts at 6 p.m.
“Heading to Tonopah this weekend, we need to play our game,” Senior said. “Our defense has to be aggressive and anticipate the steals. We need to make the first attempt at our shots, and work on staying calm and not turning the ball over as much.”
