Lady Hornets trounce Trona in non-league action

A team that hustles and plays good offense will win games and that’s what the Lady Hornets have been doing the past two games according to their coach.

On Tuesday Beatty (9-3 overall, 3-0 Division IV Southern) traveled to Trona, California for non-conference action and won 58-11.

Hornets coach Aimee Senior said it was a good time to work on some skills.

“Playing against Adelson and then Trona gave us a chance to work on areas where we need to improve,” Senior said. “One of our biggest weaknesses we have is rebounding. We don’t get into position and box out. We stand flat-footed or on tippy-toes and reach for the ball. Trona was another game to work on this.”

A few players stood out in the last two games the coach said.

“Andrea Leon had a great game against Adelson,” Senior said. “Maggie Cathcart – a good team leader – always plays hard, whether it’s practice or a game. Then there was Denise Gonzalez. She also gave me 100 percent. She has good anticipation and plays hard defense.”

Senior liked the way the girls played over the past two games.

“Overall, we played well against Adelson,” she said. “And we played well against Trona – lots of hustle, quite a few fast breaks, good defense, improvement on running the offense and good teamwork. These girls play well together, which is one good reason they are doing well right now. We need to continue to work on those fundamentals mentioned earlier.”

Stats for Trona:

Leon 5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals; Savannah Mell, 2 rebounds, 1 assist; Maggie Cathcart 7 points, 4 assists; Denise Gonzalez 8 points, 8 rebounds, 9 steals, 4 assists; Jasmin Pelayo, 4 points, 2 assists; Sandra Garcia 8 rebounds; Alexia Gill 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists; Karina Villanueva 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals; Arianna Oseguera 10 points, 15 rebounds.

The Beatty boys (8-5, 2-1) lost to Trona in a close one (57-46) in non-league play.

Both Beatty teams travel to Round Mountain next week on Thursday. Action starts at 4 p.m.
