Nevada sent 13 players to the World Horseshoe Tournament in St. George, Utah, which came to a close on July 29.
The world tournament is a two-week event with over 1,000 players, big money and big trophies. Nevada earned one first-place world championship ( Dan Dunn) one second place (Debbie Painter), one third place (Dok Hembree from Pahrump) and a couple of fifth places, all in the money.
At the world tournament, Pahrump’s Mike Nicosia got a fifth place, Don Brown and Dave Barefield placed outside the money, which was past sixth place.
Pahrump had its last NHPA-sanctioned tournament on Aug. 12 with Don Brown of Pahrump taking tournament champion, Dan Dunn with second and Dok Hembree getting third. In the B Division, local Dave Barefield received first place with six wins, no losses. Mike Nicosia provided a feast for players and friends.
“Our next event for Pahrump will be September 24, at Petrack Park during the Fall Festival,” organizer Mike Norton said. “This is a non-sanctioned tournament, everyone is welcome to play. Pre-register at the Chamber of Commerce office in the Nevada State Bank building on Highway 160.”

The Nevada State Horseshoe Pitching Association State Championship will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 26 at the Joe Friel Sports Complex. There will be 34 entries from all over Nevada. Registration is closed, but spectators are welcome for those that want to learn about tournament horseshoe pitching.
