Larry Goins will be the new Trojans athletic director, taking over for Ed Kirkwood, whose last day was Friday.
Goins has 26 years as an athletic director and 37 years as a teacher to draw from. He is also a former Trojans teacher, coach and athletic director (1985-2001).
“I want to add to what Ed Kirkwood and Kendra McCauley have been doing,” Goins said. “Both of them have been doing a good job doing what they do and I just want to add a little to that.”
Goins started teaching out of state in 1975 in South Dakota.
He started his teaching career in Pahrump in 1985, retiring in 2014. He left Pahrump in 2001 to teach with the Clark County School district at Sierra Vista (2001-2008) and then finished his career at Desert Oasis (2008-2014).
In his long teaching career he coached football (14 years), wrestling (1 year), golf (25 years), basketball (5 years) and track (8 years).
In addition to his coaching, he also has worked with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and has worked as the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Directors Association.
As the new Trojans AD, Goins hopes to continue the quality of services that Kirkwood provided.
“I want to continue to help coaches and kids,” Goins said. “I want to make it so that coaches can spend more time coaching and less time doing admin stuff.”
He said the school’s athletic department is the front yard of the school.
“We want to make sure it’s kosher and done real well,” the new AD said. “This means we’ve got to try to do things right and done the best we can.”
For the past couple of years the Trojans have had only one home track meet and no home cross-country meets.
“My experience working in Clark County will help us with these concerns,” he said. “Clark County has made some travel cutbacks, and schools don’t want to travel to Pahrump. Perhaps with some help with the track coaches we can bring back an invitational to Pahrump. At one time we had 28 schools coming to Pahrump for a track invitational. I would like to think we can get a handle on that.”
