The Trojans girls volleyball team is looking good for the 2016 fall season with four veteran players returning from last years playoff team, and with the new Class 3A Sunset League formed, the Trojans should have a break-out year.
But Trojans coach Jill Harris isnt making any predictions though and keeping her feelings about the team reserved.
The top three teams from last year, Faith Lutheran, Sierra Vista and Spring Valley are gone, but we still have to have some players step up this year to have a good year, Harris said. But I am still excited about the season.
The team will have the following four veteran starters returning to the team after losing five seniors from last years team: senior Koral Hearn, senior Jill Smith, senior Alexis Trieb and senior Bethany Calvert.
The Trojans had a winning season of 18-17, finishing in fourth place with a loss to Virgin Valley in the first round of the playoffs. Harris has taken the team to the playoffs four straight years in a row.
The coach said she felt last years team was capable of doing better than fourth place.
This season depends on the team building confidence early, Harris said. I want to see who from the underclassmen will step up and be the new varsity players.
Harris was pleased with the 16 to 20 girls that had been showing up for open gym during the summer, but she wants more to come out and she says the team needs a strong leader this year.
We will miss the kids that left the team last year and we need time to build the new team, build chemistry before the season starts, she said. This means I need to see the players faces at the gym. I also need to see them at camp at the end of the month.
The Trojans volleyball camp will run from July 28-30 at the main gym from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
