The Pahrump junior varsity team played at home against the Tonopah varsity team for a non-league game.
Although the two teams do have a history, the teams are far from being heated rivals.
Pahrump has grown and now has an enrollment of just over 1,200 students. The Trojans played the Muckers with four varsity girls and the rest junior varsity girls and swept the doubleheader 13-2, and 18-1.
Susan Toomer coached the Trojans and she is well known for coaching good hitters as the score indicated.
Tonopah has a young team and despite being 2-0 in league play, has had a soft schedule thus far.
Muckers Coach Ken Jose said prior to the game that his team needed to see what decent pitching was like and Pahrump gave them that look.
“We just have not played a team where the pitcher could get the ball over the plate,” Jose said.
The Trojans also gave his outfield a much needed workout. It has been awhile since the Muckers had played a team that could hit the ball. In their previous games the Muckers had scored 78 runs in four games. That was against teams like Hawthorne and Beaver Dam.
Errors were another concern of the Muckers.
“My team is young and needs to work on the fielding. I have a lot of players playing that have never played softball before. Some have never even thrown a ball before,” he said.
There is something to be said for youth sports, which has helped Pahrump improve its softball team. The Trojans varsity team went to state last year.
Tonopah left 19 batters on the bases and had 13 strikeouts in the two games. The team also compiled 18 errors, 9 in each game. The Muckers just were not able to calm down and concentrate on the fundamentals.
