Repairs for the Pahrump Valley High School athletic track will commence after graduation is over on May 30.
Trojans Athletic Director Ed Kirkwood said he walked the track prior to the season with assistant principal Jason Odegard.
“We found some big cracks and splits prior to the season and so we had the company come out and look at it and fill the cracks for safety reasons,” he said. “The heat really takes a toll on the surface, more so than the use.”
According to maintenance and operations director Cameron McRae, the repairs are necessary.
“This needs to be done every five to seven years to extend the service life of the track,” McRae said. “If we do not do this, the track would become unsafe to use and a complete redo of both the top surface and subsurface rubberized track would be $500,000.”
He said the price tag on the repairs came to $102,000 and the contract was awarded to General Acrylics, a company from Las Vegas that specializes in this type of work.
McRae said the work should take approximately 12 days for the track.
“We are starting May 30 and then we are going to try and crack seal and recoat the asphalt areas, which will take five to seven days,” he said. “The entire field area will be closed to all users during this time.”
The grass practice field will be available during this period.
