The Trojans Football Third Annual Spaghetti dinner was a huge success on Saturday.
The dinner attracted 400 hungry people, which was 100 more people than last year. More importantly, the fundraiser raised $2,686 more than last year for a grand total of $7,786.
“It was an amazing success,” exclaimed Holly Clayton, organizer of the event. “It was tons of food and laughs. “Our football players decided that we will be donating our extra food to the veterans’ food pantry again this year. They were wonderfully appreciative last year to the canned food drive we did for them. All the proceeds goes to buying expensive equipment for the football team, such as tackling dummies and sleds.”
The Trojans have a scrimmage at Durango this weekend in Las Vegas and will be starting the season with a home game against Bonanza on August 29.
Trojans will be using the Jet Sweep Offense for the second year in a row. The new offense revived the Trojans rushing game for the first time in several years.
Lead fullback Scott Maughan came away last year with 716 yards. The team rushed for 1,620 yards and averaged 180.9 yards per game. If the team exceeds its 79 yard average in passing from last year than the sky is the limit this year.
The recent success of the program has spurred a new interest in football. This year 72 athletes come out for the varsity team this year. More players this year mean less players will be playing both ways.
