Local weightlifter finally breaks the 400 barrier in powerlifting after trying for three years.
Gary Miller, who stands at 5 foot 5 inches and is 65 years old, organizes a state powerlifting contest each year at the Nugget.
On May 23 he set a personal record and powerlifted 402 pounds in Phoenix, Ariz.
“I have been trying this lift since 2012 at the world meet,” he said. “I set a world record at 368 pounds back then but missed 400 pounds.”
Since then he has competed in Arizona, Utah and California state meets chasing after his goal.
On June 13 in Utah he hopes to break this personal record by lifting 410 pounds.
The Tonopah Chuckers will be hosting the “High Desert Showdown,” which is a sanctioned tournament at the Joe Friel Sports Complex on June 13. Registration closes at 9:30 a.m. The contest starts at 10 a.m.
On Sunday there will be a high/low non-sanctioned for fun tournament. Signups will be the same as Saturday.
