Trojans beat Desert Pines with timely bats

Trojans baseball, led by the hitting of senior Parker Hart and sophomore Willie Lucas, defeated Desert Pines 11-1 on Monday.

The game was called in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule, which allows the umpire to end an unbalanced game when a team is winning by 10 runs after the fifth inning.

Hart had a double, a stolen base and scored two runs, while Lucas had two hits and a stolen base, and also scored a run. Pahrump had three doubles in the game, Drew Walker and Garrett Lucas hit the others. The team scored four runs in the first, one in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the fifth to end the game.

The coach was pleased with the timely hitting that the Pahrump Valley (6-9 overall, 1-0 Sunset League) team exhibited during the game.

“Against Desert Pines (3-8-1, 0-1), offensively, we are starting to show some life,” the coach said. “Parker Hart and Willie Lucas continued to hit well, and we came up with some timely hitting, which has been our main struggle throughout the year.”

Trojans coach Brian Hayes said Garrett Lucas pitched another great game.

“Against the Jaguars, Garrett pitched like our ace, allowing only one hit, two walks, while striking out eight,” Hayes said.

He pitched five solid innings.

Hayes said the Trojans traveled up north to Reno for a weekend tourney at Hug High School, where he felt the team played well.

“This weekend we finished with one win, two losses and a tie,” the coach said. “Although we only came away with one win, we pitched well. We still need to be more consistent, both offensively and defensively. A bright spot from Reno was the play of Dylan Grossell. He hit the ball well, pitched well, and played solid defense. We have been waiting for someone to step up and earn a spot. Hopefully, this will be a sign of things to come.”

The Trojans host Cheyenne (0-7, 0-1) in their second league game of the season today at 3:30 p.m.
