The Trojans boys soccer team is looking to turn things around this year.
For the Trojans, who were 5-13-3 last season with no league wins, they can only improve, and this is the attitude second-year coach Wes Icard is taking.
“This year, with the changes in the league, we feel this will be a great opportunity for us,” Icard said. “We feel we can definitely compete in this league.”
Icard said he feels one of his standouts should be senior goalkeeper Nick Harris.
“Harris has worked hard all summer, he put in a lot of training hours by going to camps this summer,” Icard said.
“I have been training in Las Vegas since spring,” Harris said. “I have been seeing coach Dan Schell, the UNLV goalkeeping coach. It’s too early to tell but we are more confident as a team because most of us have played together since our freshman year.”
The coach said seniors Paul Holms and Alex Ramierez should also be impact players.
“Both those players have three years’ varsity experience,” the coach said.
The new league puts the Trojans in Class 3A Sunset League, which will have the following teams in it: Cheyenne, Desert Pines, Sunrise Mountain, Western and Mojave.
This new league will be far from easy as Western, who finished as league champs last year, should be gunning for the title this year. Sunrise Mountain finished in second place in the Sunrise league last year.
The last time the Trojans appeared in the playoffs according to Nevadapreps was in 2007.
