Trojans gain valuable experience at annual Holiday Classic

Trojans wrestling took on the Las Vegas Holiday Classic over the weekend.

Every year Pahrump sends wrestlers to this tournament to measure their skills against some of the best high school wrestlers in the country.

The two-day tournament was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Friday and Saturday.

Last year the team sent five veteran wrestlers and placed 19th out 74 wrestlers. This year all five team members were first-year varsity wrestlers. Although the team didn’t place, Trojans wrestling coach Craig Rieger said they all gained valuable experience.

“Our wrestlers faced some top wrestlers,” he said. “They lost some close matches, but it was a great learning experience for them.”

He said the 64-man bracket is the toughest these wrestlers would face all year.

The following wrestlers competed for Pahrump: Senior Nick Iwinski (152), senior Kevin Daffer (160), senior Billy Carter (220), sophomore Morgan White (182) and sophomore Jeremy Albertson (195).

Iwinski went 2-2, Daffer went 1-2, White was 0-2, Albertson was 1-2 and Carter was 1-2.

The team’s next action is after vacation on Jan. 5 at Clark at 4 p.m. They will take on Clark and Spring Valley. Then on Jan. 6 the team hosts Western and Cheyenne at 4 p.m.
