Trojans girls golf searching for matches

Due to the realignment, the Pahrump Valley girls golf team find themselves in a league searching for competition.

Clark, Sierra Vista, Spring Valley and Faith Lutheran are now Class 4A. This year, Pahrump could be the only team in the Sunset League of Class 3A with a full team. By definition, the minimum amount of players is four, and the maximum number is six.

“I don’t know if we are the only team,” Trojans girls golf coach Bob Hopkins said. “I will find out next Monday with the match against Western.”

Regardless of what the coach finds out on Monday, he does admit he had to be creative with the schedule.

His first competition was in a Sunrise match at Virgin Valley, the next one after that was with Bishop Gorman, which was past deadline. The team plays another Sunrise game with Boulder City on Thursday, then the Western match on Monday. On the schedule, there are matches with Mojave and Desert Pines scheduled, but it is unclear if there are full teams with those schools.

Trojans athletic director Larry Goins said this is a concern for golf.

“It means that if we post one team score, we will be the Sunset League champs,” Goins said. “I am concerned that it might happen in other sports. Worse yet, is that many of them won’t have JV and “B” teams, so we don’t get to play!”

Despite the schedule, the team is going on with the season and Hopkins liked the results from the first match at Virgin Valley last Wednesday.

“I was pleased with scores for the most part,” he said. “It was three of the girls’ first high school golf match ever. Jordan (Egan) and Helen (Vann) are first-year players. Alexis (Norman) is just a freshman. We will improve as the year goes on.”

As far as how the team did, Hopkins liked the results.

“We had three girls make the cut after the front nine,” the coach said after the first match with Virgin Valley. “The cut was 58.”

Makalea Petrie, who shot a 95, Krista Toomer a 112 (which was 20 strokes worse than her qualifying score), and Alexis Norman, 114, are the three who made the cut. Desire Hembree shot a 61; Jordan Egan shot a 63 and Helan Vann shot a 64.

Boulder City’s Lani Potter shot 3-over-par 74, and the Eagles rolled to victory in a Class 3A Sunrise League golf match at Oasis Golf Club in Mesquite.

According to NevadaPreps.com, Boulder City shot 394, followed by Tech (452), and Chaparral (515).
