Julie Carrington has been hired as the new varsity head coach for the Pahrump Valley girls soccer team.
Carrington takes the position after leading the junior varsity squad the past two seasons.
When Pamela Larmouth left, I became assistant varsity coach working under Sarah Kent, Carrington said. This year Sarah Kent will be the assistant varsity coach.
Carrington had a great record while coaching the junior varsity teams, going 10-1-1 her first year then 10-0-4 last season.
She said she became involved with soccer seven years ago through her kids.
I began working with soccer when my son played but really became involved with the sport in 2009 when my daughter, Kaitlyn Carrington, a junior this year at PVHS, began with the AYSO soccer camp, Carrington said. I give credit to Sydney Dennis (Trojans soccer player) for her kindness and support at that camp that helped Kaitlyn to feel welcome and enjoy the sport.
Carrington served on the AYSO board, served as a team parent, regional referee, intermediate coach, all-star coach and auditor.
She then became involved with high school coaching.
Carrington, who has worked for the Pahrump Community Church Preschool since 2006 as the director, enjoys coaching soccer because she loves the fast-paced action of the sport.
I also enjoy the team aspect, teaching skills such as effective (attitude, and teamwork), cognitive (tactics), psychomotor (soccer skills). Also at the high school level, the girls have a passion for soccer and they want to work hard. We try to teach them how to work as a team. One person may score, but it takes a team to win.
The coach also believes that schoolwork comes first before sports.
The Trojans girls are having their second annual girls soccer camp August 1-5, 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at the high school fields for fifth through eighth grade girls. The cost is $60 and can be paid the first day of camp. The camp will help the Lady Trojans with costs for new training equipment and a tournament they are hoping to attend. If you are interested in the camp, contact the coach at 775-513-8783.
Soccer tryouts for the Lady Trojans will be August 14-15, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
