The Trojans finished off the week by going 1-1. On Thursday they played their first home game and got pummeled by (Clark 4-3 overall, 1-1 Sunset League) in conference play 13-2, and then on Saturday they beat a Cheyenne Mountain, Colorado team 11-7.
Clark scored two runs and exploded for eight runs in the seventh to pull away late. Pahrump (6-5, 1-1) committed five errors.
Trojans coach Brian Hayes was disappointed with his team’s play on Thursday.
“We fell apart defensively in the seventh in the Clark game,” Hayes said. “Kyle (Kral) relieved Garrett (Lucas) and threw strikes, but we didn’t make plays defensively. We allowed eight freebies in that inning and all eight runs were unearned.
“We struggled offensively, with only four hits. The most frustrating part was that we didn’t see any good pitching (from Clark).”
Hayes saw his team turn things around on Saturday afternoon.
“The difference in this game and Clark was our offense,” the coach said. “We put together two big innings, eight in the first and three in the fifth. Drew Walker pitched well, and Josh did a good job in relief. We need to find a shortstop when Drew pitches.”
According to Hayes, the Colorado team had a lot better pitching than Clark.
“Against this Colorado team we played the game better,” he said.
After the Colorado game, the team batting average is .299 with an on-base percentage of .435.
In the early season, junior outfielder Parker Hart is the lead hitter for the team, batting .516. Hart has 16 hits in 31 at bats.
The Trojans have the following four starters batting over .300 in addition to Hart: Shelton Cajudoy .312, John MacDonald .333, Willie Lucas .333, Garrett Lucas .345.
The team is currently playing in the Chaparral tournament in Las Vegas, which ends today.
