The Trojans boys basketball team hosted Sunrise Mountain Tuesday and lost, 58-40, to open the season.
Despite the loss, the team showed some promise. In the first quarter Pahrump scored 11 points to the Miners’ 20 and only 4 points in the second quarter to their 13, and the team could have given up there at the half, behind 33-15.
After the half, in the third and fourth quarters the Trojans refused to die and matched the Miners point for point. Both teams scored 12 points during the third and in the fourth both scored 13.
Trojans coach John Toomer still believes the Trojans need more offense. In the third quarter, the Trojans had problems passing and started to force shots. This resulted in 4-5 missed shots in a row in the beginning of the fourth quarter.The team’s scrappy defense kept the game within reach but the offense took a whole half to get started and this gave the Miners too much of a lead in the second half.
Toomer was not pleased with how his team played offense.
“To win games like this, we’ve got to be able to run our offense,” he said.
Senior Danny Foss led the team with 12 points and he was helped by sophomore Bryce Odegard, who scored 11.
This weekend the boys are at the Serpent Tournament in Hawthorne, Nevada, which started Thursday and ends Saturday.
