Yes, Lauren Ashford, Lauren Koenig, and Andi Bishop have all graduated. They were three key seniors that will be greatly missed from the Trojans volleyball team this year. But, Trojans coach Jill Harris is still excited about this season.
Last week Robyn Felder, the Dixie State girls volleyball coach, came to give a three-day camp from Thursday to Saturday at the high school. During the camp, Harris was able to evaluate players, and her offense and defense.
She said Isabel Meza, Koral Hearn, Jill Smith and Alexis Trieb were all looking good during camp.
Smith looked tired on the first day, but she came looked encouraging after the second and third day, Harris said.
The coach said she was looking forward to working with some new juniors that came up to the varsity team like Meza, Angel Gibson, Jackie Stobbe and Adrianna Sandoval.
In addition to new players, Harris said she will be trying out a 6-2 offense.
By going to a 6-2, the Trojans will have more attackers. The offense also calls for two setters. This formation is good for a team in which the setters are also very good attackers, where the coach does not want to waste that talent. Last years Trojans proved they had some great attackers and decent setters so this change should be good for the girls.
I have not used this offense in a long time, Harris said.
Defensively, the girls will be running a perimeter defense. This defense proved itself last year as the Trojans were one of the better defensive teams in the Sunset League.
In this defense, there are three players dedicated to the court lines.
During the camp, Felder reinforced the defense and so we should be good at it, she said. We also have a good group of freshmen entering. They hustle and are an aggressive bunch.
Harris was quiet on how she felt the Trojans will do in the new league, but she said that one of the top teams in the league should be Cheyenne.
Their coach has done a lot of hard work with those girls, she said.
