The Trojans boys and girls track teams were at the Grant Bushman Invitational in Moapa Valley on May 5 to prepare for the regional meet which starts on May 12. The regional meet will also be at Moapa Valley.
“Grant Bushman was great meet/event assimilation for us, gearing up toward region at the same track this weekend in Moapa,” Trojans track coach McKenzie Dean said. “We went up against almost all of our competing region schools, which was a major plus. Our major goal was to get as many of our athletes to hit the qualifying standard or to improve their seeding placement for next weekend.”
The boys track team had some great finishes and took second overall out of 19 teams, scoring 111.5 points. Mojave was first (122), Del Sol third (77), Desert Pines fourth (65).
The boys took five first-place finishes in the meet. Bryce Odegard was like a machine, winning first in three events. He took first in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 54 seconds), the 1,600 (4:47.99) and the 3,200 (10:48.31). Pahrump almost had sweeps in the 1,600 and 3,200, for Layron Sonerholm took second in both events, running 4:52.88 in the 1,600 and 10:49.72 in the 3,200.
Dylan Montgomery took first in the 110-meter hurdles (15.74 seconds) and Jeremy Albertson took first in the discus (152 feet, 8 inches).
Chance Farnsworth jumped 6-0 for third place.
The girls track team took sixth place (43.5 points). Finishing first was Virgin Valley (134.5), second was White Pine (114.5), third was Mojave (89.5), fourth was Moapa Valley (87.5) and fifth was Boulder City (86).
Thrower Caeli Havel had the best showing for the girls, taking second in the discus (97-07) and third in the shot put (32-02).
Dean said this meet was all about getting focused.
“Mentally preparing ourselves has been a central focus this week,” Dean said. “I’m really proud of our team and believe in them. We are right in the mix on the boys side for top spot and plan to leave it all on the track, hopeful that our hard work this season will play in our favor.”
