Two Trojan girl golfers are headed for the girls state golf tourney in Elko

The Division I-A Southern Nevada Girls Golf Regionals were at Boulder Creek and for the sixth straight time the Crusaders took the title with a team score of 340. In second was Clark, with 353 and Tech was third with a 442.

Boulder Creek, in Boulder City, is a challenging course that challenges golfers to use every club in their bag.

The Trojans girls golf team went to the Southern Nevada Regionals as individuals.

The team didn’t qualify to attend the regionals at Boulder Creek.

For the Trojans, Riley Moore carded a 132 and Kelli Hunn carded a 143. Both will be going to the Nevada Division I-A State Golf Tournament in Elko on Oct. 20 at the Ruby View Golf Course.

Hunn was a last-minute entry because Spring Valley’s golfer, Paige Thompson, withdrew.

The big story for the Trojans was senior Jayde Woodworth didn’t qualify because she had been sick most of the season. She had qualified for state the last two seasons.

Trojans Coach Bob Hopkins had this to say on the season, “We just have to work a lot harder in the offseason if we are going to improve,” he said.

“We will not get better because we are a year older. We have everyone back but Jayde and Kelbie, but if we don’t play in the off season we won’t be any better than we are now.”

The top golfer was senior Julia Becker of Faith Lutheran.

She started her day with six consecutive pars and shot a par 36 on the Eldorado Valley front nine of Boulder Creek.

She then finished 2-under par for the back nine on the Desert Hawk portion of Boulder Creek.

Becker finished with a 2-under-par 70 for the day and won her second regional.
